Obituary

It is with extraordinary sadness that we mourn the peaceful passing of Maria da Conceicao Fonseca Oliveira Arruda on Thursday, January 12, 2023 in her 86th year.  Maria was born on April 29, 1936 in Ribeira Quente, Sao Miguel, Portugal.  Maria was predeceased by her loving husband Paulo Arruda.  Maria was the outstanding mother of Frank(Debbie), Filomena(Fernando), Fatima(Steve), John(Dana) and Gus(Gail).  Proud grandmother of Sylvie, Michelle, Matthew, Neil, Nick, Nadine, Steven, Taylor and Daniel.  Loving great-grandmother to Sander, Emanuelle, Raven, Cassadie, Tyson, Maralise, Evalynn and Norah.

Maria was a beloved sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend to many and will be terribly missed.  Maria’s love of life, music, laughter, children and family fun will be forever be remembered by those who knew her.  Her devotion to her family is evident through the strong, loving connections she fostered with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  All of these qualities that she has nurtured within her family will forever keep her in our thoughts and minds as we adjust to this enormous loss.  Our memories of the many family events, occasions and trips will keep her spirit with us.  We will forever miss her, treasure her and remember her fondly.

Thinking of you all during this sad time. I will never forget Avo's incredible generosity, especially during the year that she welcomed me to stay in her home, and her amazing energy with her dance moves and insistence on trying to do physical tasks like shovelling snow even in her 80s. She was a wonderful lady with an amazing devotion to her family and faith. She will be missed by myself and all who knew her.
