Obituary
Born on June 3, 1924 in Polyany, Lemkivshchyna, in Poland to Pelahiya and Anton Sztelma. He passed away peacefully on October 7, 2021 in his 98th year at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Toronto. He was predeceased by his brothers Fedir, Teodor, Pavlo, Ivan and Hryhoriy, and by his sisters Olena and Anna in Ukraine, and by his wife of 63 years, Kateryna Sztelma (Homeniuk) . Survived by his beloved children Marika Boshyk (Stefan) and Zenon Sztelma. Proud Grandfather of Andrika Natalia Rook (Mathew) and Laryssa Alexandra Boshyk, and loving great Grandfather of Vivian Katherine Garnet Rook. After the War Anton settled in Manchester, England in 1947 where he married Kateryna and where his children were born. It was to pursue a better life for his family that Anton and his wife decided to immigrate to Canada in 1953. While working at companies like Douglas Aircraft and as custodian at the Metro Separate School Board for many years, Anton also contributed to community organizations in the diaspora, and enjoyed such hobbies as gardening, never forgetting his homeland. He was a pillar of support to his family throughout his life. He will be dearly missed for his kind, gentle, compassionate personality by his children, grandchildren, great grandchild and extended family in the USA and Ukraine. Visitation at Cardinal Funeral Home , 92 Annette Street (east of Keele) on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 from 5 to 8 pm. Panakhyda Service at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Protection (30 Leeds Street) at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at St. Volodymyr Cemetery in Oakville. Donations in memory of Anton can be made to St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation or the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
Beginning July 16, 2021 the Bereavement Authority of Ontario is once again permitting visitations and services to take place that are open to the public. We must continue to maintain physical distancing, the wearing of masks and may not allow more than 40 guests at any one time. Once the maximum limit has been reached, we will ask any additional guests to kindly wait outside in a physically-distanced line until there is room to enter safely.
