Obituary
It is with immense sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our beloved Costa (Constantine) Mareskes, who passed away on February 17, 2025. May his soul rest in peace, and may the heavens receive him with open arms for eternity.
Costa was a man of immense resourcefulness and resilience—a generous brother and dependable friend—who ultimately succumbed to health challenges beyond human control. He came from humble beginnings. Born and raised in difficult times, shortly after the end of the civil war in his native and beloved Nea Chora, Arcadia, Greece, he took flight for Canada like the rest of his siblings, landing in Montreal in August 1968.
Young and undaunted, yet full of fear of the unknown in a foreign land, he started night school just one week after arriving, determined to complete his education and earn his high school diploma while working full-time in various jobs to pay for school and support himself. His odyssey led him to graduate from high school and obtain a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Waterloo—without financial assistance from his parents, who had remained in Greece. Like all his siblings, he made it, as we say, flying without a parachute.
Costa was a successful engineer, having worked for many well-known companies such as Westinghouse, Foster Wheeler, and Atomic Energy of Canada. He spent five years commissioning several of the nuclear reactors at the Pickering Ontario Power Generating Complex. After the completion of the Pickering project, Costa left Atomic Energy of Canada to pursue a new passion—remodeling and constructing residential buildings. Self-taught, he became more than just a builder. He followed a hidden passion and became a master carpenter and architect, a calling he pursued until the end of his life.
He will be missed by all, especially by his beloved wife, Lynn (Xu) Mareskes, who for 20 years stood by him and supported him in difficult times, particularly in his later years when his health became challenging. Costa was a man of boundless energy, believing that no problem was beyond his ability to solve and no challenge too great to overcome. Yet, like the Titanic, he ultimately fell victim to the unseen dangers lurking beneath the calm seas of life. May his memory remain an inspiration to those facing adversity, and may they take comfort, as he did, in the belief that there is always hope. May his soul be blessed for eternity.
Costa is survived by his beloved wife, Lynn his brother, Soto (Sotirios) Mareskes; his sister-in-law Yan Xu and his extended family of cousins, nephews, and nieces in Beijing, Athens, Montreal, Chicago, Toronto, Boston, New York, and Augusta, GA. He was predeceased by his father, Dimitrios Mareskes; his mother, Christina (Lambiris) Mareskes; his sisters, Eugenia Stamatakos, Fedra Laskaris, Anastasia Armyros, and Stavroula Hasou; and his brother, George Mareskes.
