Obituary

Ellis, Robert (Bob) Edward, passed away in Toronto, Ontario, December 18, 2022, at age 82. Born in Toronto, May 19, 1940, to Darnley Ellis, Sr. and Kathleen Ellis (née Blair). He was the second youngest of eight children, including Thelma (Gerald Sr.), Aubrey Sr., Darnley, Jr., Roy, Delores, Victor and Yvonne.

He was married to Estelle Amaron and father to Colin Ellis and Adrienne Ellis. Uncle to Gerald Searles (Neda), Keith Searles (Christine), Marilyn Searles, Lynda Searles (George) Kenneth Searles (Noel), Deborah Simon (Selwyn), Aubrey Ellis, Jr., and had many great-nephews and nieces.

Bob graduated from the University of Windsor and was employed for many years as a youth service worker/supervisor at St. Christopher House (now West Neighbourhood House), where he coached lacrosse, basketball and other activities. To this day he has a loyal following of former players and other young men and women from the Alexandra Park Community. For many, he was a beloved father figure.

After retiring from St. Christopher House, he worked for Family Services and George Brown College. He completed his work career as an employment counsellor at the YWCA helping many people, especially newcomers to Canada, with their career goals and job searches.

Bob’s great joy in life was singing and, along with his friends Jay Jackson, Jack Gelbloom, and brother Roy Ellis (replaced by Shelley Miller after Roy’s death), formed Take Three Plus One, a do-wop group that rocked the old R & B tunes we all still love today. He loved jazz, sports, cooking and discussing politics.  He was a devoted family man, always encouraging and supporting Colin and Adrienne. As a husband he was kind, loving, a great listener, problem solver and best friend. He also had a fabulous sense of humour and his home was always filled with laughter.

Bob lived his 82 years fully and has left a legacy of love that will never die.

My deepest condolences for your loss! Bob was my first basketball coach at St. Christopher house back in the late 50’s. He was a mentor, coach and ultimately a friend. He always had a great sense of humor and a beaming smile on his face! Although I haven’t seen him or talked to him for many years I believe we would have picked from where we left off many years ago. May you find comfort that he is God’s hands now!
