Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gilberto Ribeiro of Toronto Ontario on February 24th, 2025, at the age of 89 years old. Gilberto was born on the island of St Michael, Azores, Portugal on September 19th, 1935.

Gilberto is survived by his devoted and loving wife Albertina Ribeiro of 63 years, 3 daughters, 2 sons and their respective (spouses) and children.

Daughter Ana (Michael) Laverty, daughter Maria Ribeiro, daughter Gourete (Dan) Rothenbury, son Walter (Olivia) Ribeiro and his youngest son Neal Ribeiro.

His many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition, he is also survived by a sister Regina Ribeiro and his youngest brother Joao Manuel Ribeiro and their respective spouse and children.

Gilberto was a hardworking man, loving husband, strong & protective father, sweet grandfather and great-grandfather.

Gilberto loved the outdoors, as a young man in Portugal he started his work journey as a farmer, upon immigrating to Canada he worked construction.

Gilberto spent many years in the construction industry in Toronto, until a life altering illness rendered him unable to do so.

He loved gardening and his gardens were a source of pride and enjoyment throughout the years. He gifted his love of gardening to his children for which they all now share.

He loved all things to do with nature, animals, and game shows.

He was funny, and often had a twinkle in his eyes, and when unable to speak his gestures said it all. “Ya Ya its ok”

He was an amazing neighbour, always looking out for the safety of his community.

He was a generous man, who sponsored and housed his spouse’s whole family, so they too could come to Canada and enjoy the Canadian life he loved so much.

A special thank you to the nurses and caregivers at Lakeside Long Term Care for their loving care and support.

Dear Maria, I was saddened by the news of the loss of your dad. An immediate image came to my mind of your dad and my dad talking in front of the house as they often did as neigbours. Their hellos, conversations and quick jokes as I often heard them laugh, puts a smile on my face. I am wishing you and all your family strength and comfort through this difficult time. May your dad rest in peace.

My father Rafael and Gilberto were cousins. I would see him often when my family lived on Major St. when I was younger. He was always a happy person, funny, and very friendly. My love and sympathy to the family.

My deepest condolences to Mama Maria and the entire Ribeiro family. I remember "Papa" (as everyone on the floor lovingly called him) at Lakeside LTC. He always brought a smile to everyone's face and made me laugh on numerous occasions, especially during meal times, exercise time or around world cup soccer. He was a very caring and fun person to be around and reminded me very much of my dad. May he forever rest in peace.
