It's with great sadness to hear of the passing of our dear friend Joe. We we're lucky enough to be living next door to Joe and Olivia for several years and got to know what an amazing person he was. Anyone who knows him would agree that he was kind, smart, hard working person and a true gentlemen. There are so many fond memories of our talks with Joe and hearing the stories of his life in Portugal, coming to Canada and life here. We were always in awe watching his amazing creativity, tenacity to keep working on new projects, maintaining a perfect lawn, dedication to feeding his stray cat and most of all, his everlasting love for his wife Olivia. We are grateful that Joe always had a true interest in our family, especially our daughter Rylynn. He is such a kind soul and he will be greatly missed by all. We are praying for him and send all our love to Olivia and family during this difficult time. We will truly never forget him. Love Chris, Annette and Rylynn

To my brother Joe: When I moved next door to you 4 years ago, I had no idea that I was about to embark upon a beautiful friendship with one of the greatest guys in town. Despite our significant age gap and having met later in life, ours became a fraternal bond, marked by daily chats yelling over the backyard fence, or exchanging the latest futebol transfer-market updates on the front steps. It will never cease to amaze me how razor-sharp your brain was, as evidenced by your ability to recite with exact detail not only the recent Porto results, but those of other fixtures in leagues across Europe. I recall our very first interaction, a couple days after I had moved in: you stopped me on the sidewalk as I left my house, asking “Hey, neighbour, why do you move so fast?”. Over the years, that stuck with me, as you taught me the value of slowing down and enjoying the present. You had so much wisdom to impart on me, and I am so very grateful for it all, especially the relationship/women advice! Above all else, your love & commitment to your family were clearly paramount in life. Your dedication to Olivia, your wife of so many decades, was inspiring to witness. You were a devoted father to Paul & his wife Paula, grandfather to Victoria & Samantha; I am blessed to see firsthand the relationship with your loved ones. In you, I saw the true character of man: humility, honesty, integrity, hard work, determination, kindness, compassion, humour, self-reliance, benevolence, gratitude, charm, love, & intelligence. Ok, and maybe a tiny bit of stubbornness! But we loved you for it. You never hesitated to help your fellow man; you would give the shirt off your back to someone in need, even if it’s the last thing you had. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to know you, Joe. You brought so much joy to everyone around you. Love, Your eternal brother, Vafa
