Obituary

Matthew Mickey” Adam Main passed away peacefully at his home in Toronto on December 12, 2021 with the aid of Medical Assistance in Dying (M.A.i.D.). Matt was 46 years old. He was born with several congenital birth defects, including a heart defect known as Tetralogy of Fallot. Starting at the age of 8 months, Matt had a total of 46 surgeries and was managing 20 different physical conditions.  He found solace and liberation in his decision to end his life when the suffering of physical pain began to outweigh the quality of his life. Matthew is survived by his mother Sharon Danley, father Roy Main, half-brother Adam (Sheila), and niece Sydney. He is also survived by loyal and supportive friends that he cared for deeply and will be joining his sister Andrea Samara Main who passed on December 18, 2012. Matthew was born on February 27, 1975, in Toronto. In addition to his wicked sense of humour, Matt loved many things like sports, film and music. He found particular enjoyment through his participation  in both the VRC choir and his meditation group.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Matthew’s name to the Canadian Congenital Heart Alliance would be appreciated.

A celebration of life will be held on February 27th, 2022 via Zoom.  If you would like to attend, please email [email protected] and you will receive an invitation. Any messages of condolence, pictures or stories that you would like to share would also be appreciated.

To all of Matt's family, I had the honour and good fortune to get to know Matt through Kathryn - he was one of the first of her friends that I met, and I remember from the very first day his ready laugh and sense of mischief. Like all those who knew him I will miss him greatly, and remember the shared laughter and happiness of the times spent with him.

So very sorry for your loss. Matt was a great guy, so funny and kind. I met him more than 15 years ago at a TGH education day for CHD and then at many CCHA events and meetings. I remember driving home a couple of times after and we had some great chats. I remember when he moved into the condo on Lakeshore, he was so happy. He will be dearly missed.

To Sharon, to Roy, to Adam, and to the rest of the family, My heart goes out to you at this time. Matt was one of my closest friends for around 30 years. He was so much fun to talk to, so sociable, so intelligent, so deep. He had a lightness to him that I always gravitated toward, and enjoyed. I will forever cherish our friendship, and he will remain with me, always. Lots of love to you all.
