Obituary
It is with great sorrow that the Leandres family shares the news of the passing of their beloved mother, Felicidade Leandres on November 9, 2024 at the age of 84 after a prolonged stay in hospital.
Felicidade is predeceased by her loving husband of 64 years, Antonio, and will be dearly missed by her children, Tony, Luis (Lina), Joe, Delia (Ryan); grandchildren, Jesse, Alicia, Lauren, Rowan; siblings, d. Helena (d. Manuel), Laurinda (d. Daniel), Armanda (d. Manuel), Exeolinda (Armando), d. Virgilio (Fatima), d. Eulalia (Dominik), Maria (Jose); and numerous other family members and friends.
Felicidade was born on the Azorean island of Sao Miguel, in the town of Villa Franca. She grew up in a large family with six sisters and one brother. Through her eldest sister, Exeolinda, who had moved to Canada with her husband Armand, Felicidade was introduced to and began a long-distance courtship via letters and photos with a handsome young man named Antonio. A year later, March 30, 1959, Felicidade and Antonio were married by proxy. Eleven months later, at the age of 19, Felicidade flew across the Atlantic, and across Canada, to meet her husband for the first time. Felicidade and Antonio settled in Castlegar B.C. where she raised 3 boys. She braved many harsh winters and nights alone while Antonio worked deep in the B.C. forests clearing the way for CN and Pacific Railways. Eleven years later, Felicidade and Antonio moved to Ontario where they settled and grew their family, welcoming a daughter. Felicidade found work and enjoyment in the cafeteria at Sick Children’s Hospital, where she was known as “momma pizza”. Felicidade enjoyed helping to raise her 4 wonderful grandchildren, happiest when they ate her soups.
Felicidade was a selfless woman, always putting her family and others first, often above her own needs or desires. Her and Antonio’s home was always filled with extended family and friends, many new arrivals to Canada needing to get their start. Felicidade was happiest when she could bake or cook, often for a big crowd, then be in the background while everyone enjoyed.
Felicidade’s strength, courage and selflessness will never be forgotten. We were blessed to have her in our lives. Place your worries down now sweet mother and be at peace in the angel that you are now in Heaven.
If desired, donations in memory of Felicidade may be made to the Kidney Foundation.
