Obituary
KATERYNA SYDORENKO April 13, 1926 - August 2, 2012 Passed away at St. Joseph’s Health Centre with her daughter by her side. Wife of artist, the late Petro Sydorenko. Loving mother of daughter Halyna, son Wasyl and daughter-in-law Nadia, and cherished grandmother of Natalia and Petro. She leaves behind her sister Lubow Baziuk, nephew and godson Andrij, niece Natalia, and their families. She will be missed and fondly remembered by many cousins and extended family in Canada, USA, Ukraine, Russia, Hong Kong and Dubai. Kateryna was born in Vyderta, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine to Fr. Yosyp Wasyliw (Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church) and Dobr. Yelisaveta (nee Biletska). As a Displaced Person after WWII, she found herself in Germany where she studied medicine at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. She arrived in Canada in 1949 and worked as a nurse’s assistant at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. In 1984 she graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.A. in Socio-Cultural Anthropology. She contributed articles to various Ukrainian publications in Canada, USA, Poland and Ukraine about life in Ukraine and her WWII experiences. Heartfelt appreciation goes to the staff of St. Joseph’s Health Centre, especially mother’s “guardian angel” Joy. Family and friends will be received at the Cardinal Funeral Homes, 92 Annette St (near Keele), on Monday, August 6th and Tuesday, August 7th from 2 to 4 & 6 to 9 p.m. Panakhyda Monday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The Orthodox Rite of Funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 8th at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral (400 Bathurst St) at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Prospect Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sydorenko Memorial Publication Fund (52 Brumell Ave, Toronto M6S 4G5) would be appreciated for the preservation of archival materials and publication of the memoirs of Petro and Kateryna Sydorenko.
