Obituary
Both peaceful and sudden, she passed away at the Richmond Hill Major Mackenzie hospital on April 20th, Easter day, in her 83rd year. Beloved wife of the late José Santos. Devoted mother of Fatima and Carlos. Loving grandmother of Victoria. Sister of Grace, José, John, Duarte, and the late Louisa. Laura Santos was a remarkable wife, mother, grandma, sister, and friend. Yet, she was a tough character and loved wholeheartedly. Her heart was shared with Jose, and the two were inseparable, inspiring those around with their pure love. You could never see one without the other, hand in hand during their daily routines. As the eldest sister, she was compassionate and thoughtful towards her sisters. To her brothers, she was a source of wisdom and gentle touch, reminding them of the importance of kindness. Additionally, she always put the needs of others first before herself, like any incredible mom would. She cared for her dear children, Fatima and Carlos, ensuring that not a day went by without them being loved and cared for. This same love followed with her son-in-law and granddaughter, Paul and Victoria. However, this only scratches the surface of who she was as a person. Her love language was food, she’d spend hours at a time perfecting elaborate Portuguese dishes, always adding secret touches that made them unique. She’d ask neighbours and family to stop by her house to eat these meals, it was simply just the person she was. She’d also prepare sausages and bake donuts with the help of her sisters, Lousia and Grace, and sister in-law, Maria-José. Keeping the culinary talent a family tradition for generations to come. When she wasn’t in the kitchen, she could be seen in her garden, tending to her many potted flowers and garden of various vegetables and fruits. She watered them daily, sporting her pink sunhat, gardening vest, and bright pink watering can. In between, she took time to pray; she loved spending time in St. Agnes Church. She was the first to participate in church festivals and loved preaching the lessons from the bible. If not there, she could be seen walking College Street, searching for new slippers, shoes, or simply a lace shirt. She was the better-dressed one in any room; something of which she took pride in. She loved painting her nails, curling her hair meticulously, and brushing her teeth till they were pearly white. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do, she truly was a powerful, inspiring, and charitable woman.
