Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our family matriarch, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Maria Tavares passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 1, 2022. Maria was born on December 5, 1932 in Rabo de Peixe, São Miguel, Azores, Portugal. Beloved wife of the late Jose Tavares, mother to 10 children, grandmother of 22, great grandmother of 21 with another grandchild on the way. Maria was devoted to her faith, church, family, and Portuguese culture. Her happiest moments were being surrounded by family where she would always be found in the kitchen embracing a wooden spoon in one hand and holding a child in the other.  Maria will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her family, friends, and community.

Maria is now reunited in heaven with her husband, Jose and children Philomena, Tony-O, Johnny, and Aurelio.

Dear Fernando, primos and primas, You are in our thoughts and prayers! I am thankful that I had a chance to meet your mom and learn about our family connections. My dad always spoke so highly of her and my mother always said how she was a brave and stoic woman who raised a family with such determination and strength. I have some lovely memories of her time in Bermuda when she was on holiday. Her legacy and life lives on in you. xo

Mrs. Maria Tavares was a strong and beautiful woman who pretty much single-handedly raised a large family on her own. What a warrior - anyone would be proud to call her “mum”. Lucy, my heart breaks for you, and your family, but you are strong, just like your mum. So much love to you.
