Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Nina Kozy announces her passing. Nina had an incredibly positive outlook on life and inspired all those who met her. She died peacefully on Sunday June 30, 2013 at the age of 97. Nina was predeceased by her beloved husband, Myron Kozy. She is survived by family members living in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Born in Ukraine, she immigrated with her husband to Toronto in 1949. There, he worked as an engineer in Toronto City Hall, and Nina established a lifetime commitment to volunteer service. She was an active member of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada ( Kh. Olha Branch), serving as its President in 1950-1951. For almost twenty-five years, she was also a member of the Workshop Group of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada – Ontario Branch, and for many years volunteered at the Ivan Franko Home for the Aged. Nina was also a devoted parishioner of St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. Her many contributions included teaching at the Ukrainian School, where she was adored by her students, and being a founding member of the ‘Golden Age’ Women’s Fellowship of St. Joachim and Anna, where she remained active until her death. She was also a member of the Toronto and Area Council of Women and had recently received the distinction of a 50-year Volunteer Service Award. She was able to live in her own home, almost completely independently, until the last days of her life. The family would like to express sincere appreciation for the support that Nina received from House Calls (especially the compassionate care of Dr. Mark Nowaczynski), the CCAC, the caregivers at VHA (especially the exceptional devotion of Beverley Taylor), and the exemplary and loving care provided in her last months of life by Nadiya Shulska. Memorial prayers ( Panachyda) will be on Thursday, July 4 at 7pm at the Cardinal Funeral Home, 366 Bathurst St, with funeral on Friday, July 5 at 10 am at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 400 Bathurst St. Viewing will be on Wednesday, July 3 from 6 – 9 pm, and on Thursday July 4 from 2 – 7 pm at the Cardinal Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that anyone wishing to make a donation in Nina’s memory make it to the Ukrainian Museum of Canada – Ontario Branch, 620 Spadina Ave, Toronto, Ontario M5S 2H4, where a scholarship is being established in her name.
