Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Oriba Fatima De Sousa after a brief illness. Oriba passed away peacefully on the morning of Sunday, February 26, 2023, at the age of 88.
Oriba is predeceased by her parents, Jose Augosto and Deolinda Da Silva. She is also predeceased by her loving husband of 62 years André De Sousa (July 2019). Oriba will be missed beyond words by her children, Thomas De Sousa (Fatima) and Lucille De Sousa (Lou-Ann), grandchildren, Ainslie Di Nardo (Jeremy) and Andrew De Sousa. She is also survived by her eldest sister, Aida Costa, late (Humberto) and predeceased by her brother Jose Da Silva, sister Maria Oliveira, late (Tomas).
Oriba was born on November 13, 1934, in the town of Altares, Terceira Acores. Oriba met the love of her life and she and André were married on June 2, 1957. They immigrated to Toronto, Canada in February 1960. Oriba and André welcomed their twin children in January 1965.
Oriba was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, mother-in-law and friend. She had the most generous loving heart and touched many lives with her charming personality and contagious smile. The highlight of her days was entertaining family and friends. In the later years, Oriba and André enjoyed travelling which included bus trips to different parts of Ontario. One of their favourite spots was frequenting Niagara Falls. Her family will always be thankful and feel blessed to have a lifetime of cherished memories.
She will always be remembered as a selfless, altruistic wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother who always put everyone’s needs before her own. She always had a smile on her face even when she faced the toughest of challenges when a catastrophic brain injury brought the onset of dementia in 2013. Despite this tragedy, Oriba continued to embrace life and remained devoted to her Catholic faith. She never lost her quick wit and sense of humour. She was much loved by everyone who encountered her. She will be forever missed by her many relatives, friends and family.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the many caregivers who were part of Oriba’s journey. Additionally, our sincere gratitude to the staff at Tall Pines Long Term Care Home for your care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, Alzheimer Society of Canada or extend an act of kindness.
