Obituary

Ineke Sutherland (Catharina Annie Merousia Oosterman) - born in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, December 2, 1947, passed away in Toronto, Ontario February 17, 2025. Daughter of the late Jan Oosterman and Gerritje (Gerri) Oosterman (née Bloemendal); adored common law wife of the late Christopher Anthony Foster; sister of Gerry Oosterman and the late Janneke Oosterman-Worthington, sister-in-law of Gregory Worthingtonbeloved stepmother of Grant and Wendy, aunt of Greer, Janna and Kevin, grandmother of Bea, and great aunt of Hayden, Zoë and Linden.

Ineke was born in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, and grew up in Streetsville, Ontario.  In 1955 the Oosterman family, Ineke, her two sisters and parents, embarked upon a journey and moved to Canada.  She attended Oakville Trafalgar High School and spent time working in her parents’ poultry business before pursuing her interests in interior design.  She met Chris in December 1978 and not too long after they owned a textile manufacturing company and modern furniture and housewares importing company for many years.  She then started a bookkeeping business, ultimately buying the accounting software company she used for her clients and continued that company until her passing.

Over the years Ineke’s hobbies changed, she skied, even volunteering on the ski patrol at one point, she played tennis, she was a sailor, racing Wayfarers at the local yacht club.

She loved her dogs, Sarah and Bubbles, who both passed late last year.  Spending time in her front yard with the dogs allowed her the opportunity to engage and talk with neighbors in her Parkdale neighborhood which she really enjoyed and spoke about often.

The last five and almost a half years without her husband, Chris, have been extremely difficult for her.  She missed him everyday and they are now together again.

My most sincere condolences to the family. She was a fixture of the neighbourhood as a loving, kind and concerned presence. I looked forward to chatting with her when I walked my dog and to seeing Sarah and Bubbles, and, most recently, Emma. I still expect her to be walking out the door when I go by her house. She will be greatly missed.

Always a warm smile and hello on our walks to and from school - my daughter loved to say hi to Bubbles and Sarah, and these small but important interactions are what make a neighbourhood feel safe and warm. Thank you, Ineke, for being such a great neighbour. You will be missed.

I was one of Ineke’s neighbours, walking by with my dog her house was always a sweet experience , and a treat to have a chat with her. Almost felt like she was a second mom to me. I regret not spending some time with her for Thanksgiving. Hope she’s in peace with Bubbles and watching over us.

For the past two and half year, Inked has brought joy to our family as we walk to and from Parkdale Public School. We have spoken often about what an important part of our community she was, and I regret not telling her how much she meant to us. The only times we didn't stop to talk were the many times where she was already talking to someone else - and you could see how much people valued her thoughtful opinions on things, she was the community guidance counsellor, lawn care advisor, dog tip provider, and just a true bringer of joy. She will be SO incredibly missed by so many.
