Obituary

Maria Do Santo Cristo Pedro May 6,1956, – August 15, 2022 died peacefully at the age of 66 at her residence in Toronto with her family by her side. She is survived by her partner Sandro Mariani, sons Nelson (Anna), Luciano (Genny), daughter Carla (Esther)and grandchildren Nicholas, Ricardo, Clarisse, Matthew, Diogo, Anthony and Ethan. She will also be dearly missed by her sisters Manuela, Leontina and Susana, her nieces and nephews as well as the numerous friends she gained during her life. She will be rejoined in heaven with her parents, Maria Gilda and Antonio and her brother Antonio.

Maria grew up in São Roque, São Miguel alongside her 5 siblings prior to immigrating to Toronto at the age of 19. Despite battling a terminal illness for over 2 years she did not let it define her. In many ways it motivated her to stay strong and never give up her faith. Maria loved to travel, and she never sat still. If she wasn’t working she always found something to fill her day. On a weekend you could find her at a Portuguese bakery sipping on a galão eating a tosta mista with her beloved sister Leontina. She loved her grandchildren immensely and always bragged proudly of all their accomplishments.

Throughout her life, Maria was happiest when surrounded by family and friends usually cooking a feast. She loved to tell jokes and had an infectious laugh and a beautiful smile that warmed peoples hearts. She was an amazing mother, vavo and loyal friend who always put the needs of others ahead of her own. Although we are deeply saddened by her passing the memories she has created and everyone she charmed along the way will live on as a testament to a life well lived.

The family would like to express its gratitude to all of the staff at Princess Margaret Hospital, The Dorthy Ley Hospice and the nurses at SRT MedStaff for their dedication and understanding in taking care of Maria over the last 2 years. As expressions of sympathy, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Princess Margaret Hospital.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
