Obituary
Due to the current pandemic restrictions and under direction from our regulator, the Bereavement Authority of Ontario, effective November 23, 2020 all funerals and visitations will be by invitation only to limit the number of people in attendance and prevent the spread of COVID-19. We encourage those that are unable to attend in person to express their sympathy by posting a message of condolence to our website, donating to a charity of your choice in memory of your loved one or by sending flowers to the funeral home.
CAVALIERE UFFICIALE GIUSEPPE SIMONETTA
Passed away at Toronto Western Hospital on June 6, 2021 as the result of COVID-19, aged 92. Born in San Nicola da Crissa, Calabria, Italy on January 27, 1929 to Emilio and Filomena. Predeceased by his wife, Maria; sons Emilio and Salvatore ( “Sam”) and daughter, Filomena. Left to mourn him are his companion, Maria, and children Rosario (Lora), Tony (Jerran), Ralph (Domenica), Anna (Maurizio) and Lisa. He will be missed by numerous grandchildren and great- grandchildren, nephews and nieces and many friends. Giuseppe was a much-respected and honoured figure in Toronto’s Italian community who worked tirelessly in many capacities on behalf of Italian newcomers to Canada. A pillar of St. Francis of Assisi Church, for almost half a century he organized the iconic Good Friday procession in Little Italy. His work with the Italian consulate serves as a lasting legacy to his dedication to both his native land and his adopted country. Figlio orgoglioso d’Italia che ha lavorato instancabilmente per migliorare la vita dei suoi compagni immigranti nel loro paese adottivo. I suoi innumerevoli contributi alla communita italo-canadese testimoniano la sua dedizione e devozione.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care would be appreciated by the family.

We would like to express our sincere condolences to your family on the passing of Cav. Simonetta. He was always a sincere, caring and kind individual. He was so proud of his family and proud to serve the Italian Canadian community. He touched many lives and we were always so happy when we met him because he always had the time to ask how everyone was, he always remembered everyone. He was a pillar of this community and we will all miss him dearly. His was a life well lived but we will miss him.

From San Nicola da Crissa to Toronto, you accompanied us. You were the first to wait and meet us at Union Station upon our arrival from Calabria (San Nicola da Crissa). After a long voyage, you cultivated a WAY for us.
As our GodFather and Cavaliere, you've done so much for us! How can we ever THANK YOU? We can never compensate you, for all you have done. And what you have done for us, you have also done for so many -- always WORKING and DOING for others. Only God knows all the CHARITY and GOOD you've accomplished. Only God can grant you a PARADISE of Good Deeds Big and Small -- you deserve it!!!
GodFather Peppino, for all the people you helped, the sky isn't big enough. Only our Divine Mother can provide for you.
At this time, we are in pain and sorrow knowing you are not here with us. You've changed your address and you will no longer wait for anyone at Union Station.

The loss of Cavaliere Simonetta is a great one.. He was a pillar of generosity, caring for his community in so many ways. His ever present smile and his enthusiasm encouraged so many. He worked every day to make our society a better place for all. I was honoured to be his friend.

Mr Simonetta is going to be missed by a large community. His loss will be felt. And especially by me. He was engaging and intelligent and warm every time I met him. I can't think of anyone ( of so many Italian Canadians ) who embodied the best of our culture here in Canada and that from which our immigrant parents immigrated from,Italy. He represented us well. He is a big loss to us. I can't imagine how big to his open-hearted family as well. Thanks for all your generousity and kindness over these many years that I was privileged to know you as a friend. We are so saddened to hear of this wonderful man’s passing. He was someone that everyone knew on College Street and each of us had something good to say about him. He had a great sense of humour. He was kind and very helpful to so many people. He will be missed by his children as their spouses - and his grand children and family. He will be missed by his many friends and acquaintances. My heart goes out to the Simonetta family. God bless this beautiful man and May he rest in eternal peace.
