Obituary

Edna Alma Augustine (née Paul), a former long-time resident of Scarborough, Ontario, died peacefully in her daughter’s care on Saturday, October 22, 2022 in Toronto. She was born on June 24, 1935 to the late Francis and Elmira Paul (née Lewis) in Portsmouth, Dominica, later immigrating to Canada in 1965.

She is survived by her only child, Karen Miranda Augustine, her sister Martina Valentine (née Paul), her nephew Edmund Valentine (Angele), and her ex-husband Victor Augustine, as well as many relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved nephew, Morgan Valentine, and brothers: Webster Paul, Wilmoth Hyacinth, Bernard Savarin, and Moffatt Savarin.

On Wednesday, October 26, a private viewing for family will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Cardinal Funeral Homes (92 Annette Street). Her graveside memorial and burial will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Cemetery (7770 Steeles Avenue) in Markham, followed by a reception. Wear a little blue.

A compassionate woman, Edna was moved by the plight of the homeless and people experiencing housing and food insecurity. For several decades, she helped feed the homeless in downtown Toronto through the Out of the Cold program and spent many years volunteering for the St. Rose of Lima School’s Breakfast Club program, which provided hot meals for students in Scarborough, among others.

A deeply religious woman of the Catholic faith, she revered the Blessed Virgin Mary and wore blue in her honour. Over the years, she developed a beautiful collection of St. Mary statuettes, which she acquired at pilgrimages to Belgium, Israel, Egypt and many other locations around the globe.

Her laughter was infectious. Her kindness touched everyone. Her life was modest. Her generosity and desire to help enriched people’s lives.

She will be deeply missed by many in the Queen West/Grange neighbourhood, various Scarborough church communities (including St. Boniface, St. Rose of Lima, and St. Martin de Porres), and by those directly impacted by her charitable activities.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Out of the Cold Foundation in her memory.

Her daughter would like to thank the wonderful geriatric team at Seniors House Calls.

May the ancestors receive Edna’s peaceful and loving spirit with joy.
