Obituary

Passed away peacefully with family by her side on Tuesday, February 26 at the age of 62. Daughter of the late Allan and Bernice Lakanen. Beloved sister of Patrick Lakanen, Anne Zaborski, Margaret (Steve Doswell), Caroline (Raj Srivastava), and the late Michael Lakanen. Proud aunt of Kathryn, Jenny, and Michael. She adored the many cats in her life: Chip, Chester, Napoleon, Ivy, and the late Domino. Mary Lou will be dearly missed by her family and friends, including those at 10 Glen Everest. She will be fondly remembered for her generous spirit, immense kindness, and sharp sense of humour. She was incredibly smart, intuitive, and witty. Mary Lou was extremely independent and active. When she did rest, she enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune (and would concede to watching Jeopardy with her sister after). She was selfless in her compassion and willingness to serve others, including the residents in her building and the hospital. She was commended by the medical team in the last couple of years for her courage and tenacity. A special thank you for the amazing care given by the 2 Donnelley staff of St. Michael’s, especially Dr. Martina Trinkas and Dr. Dori Abosh who were unbelievably helpful and hard-working. As well as the nursing care staff of Palliative Care especially Dr. Laupacis and Nurse Practioner Sheila. Friends may call Cardinal Funeral Home (366 Bathurst St., Toronto) on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 for Memorial Visitation from 5-7 pm, followed by a Memorial Service at 7 pm. In honour of Mary Lou’s memory, we invite you to wear pink. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mary Lou's name to the Palliative Care Unit at St. Michael's Hospital (Toronto) or the World Wildlife Federation (WWF).
