Obituary

It is with the saddest of hearts that we share the loss of Alfredo Moniz Gonçalves. Born in 1944 in Portugal, Alfredo lived a full and wonderful life until he passed on 28 May 2020 in Toronto. He is survived by his wife Maria Emilia, and will be sadly missed by his children Daniel and Belinda, and daughter-in-law Magda. His memory is cherished by his brothers and sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Alfredo wanted to be remembered as "A scrappy guy who came to Canada without much and he made it." He loved his family and friends. He was a lover of food, a lifelong Benfica and Portugal national team soccer supporter, especially proud reigning UEFA Euro and UEFA Nations league champion. He died a champion. He loved hot weather, the sun, and ocean. He was a wonderful friend to many, a fun guy to be around, was always joking, laughing, and loved a good prank. He loved to dance, and did every chance he could. He loved holidays, and any excuse to get together with friends and family. He lived his life without care, and never judged others. When he came to Canada, he didn't have much help, but he helped so many people, strangers and family alike. He would give money to those in need, and the shirt off his back without being asked. He was supportive of his extended family, and helped give so many a break by bringing them to Canada and helping them get on their feet, so they too could make it and realize a dream of a better life. He was never greedy, so long as he had family, food and soccer, there was enough for everyone. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him. The Gonçalves family would like to thank everyone for their support during these very difficult times.
