Obituary
Peacefully April 25th, 2009, surrounded by his family, in his 82nd year at the Toronto General Hospital, following a brief illness. He is survived by Gertrudes, his loving wife of 57 years, cherished daughter Ana P. Lopes, admiring son-in-law Don Tapscott, and adoring grandchildren Alex and Niki Tapscott. He will be missed by his nephews Paul Marques, Samuel Marques and Filipe Daniel Lopes Moreno. In his professional life Antonio held executive positions in the insurance and banking industry and retired as a successful entrepreneur in Canada. As an active volunteer in the Portuguese speaking community of Toronto, Antonio will be remembered as a leader, organizer and intellect, who was fiercely proud of his heritage. Among other things he was a founding member, President and Chairman of the Board of the Sporting Clube Portugues de Toronto, the Canadian affiliate of the renowned Lisbon sports club. Throughout his life, Antonio relished his conversations and debates with friends who gathered each day to discuss sports, politics, and the state of the world. He was a role model for countless others in the community and an exemplar of the successful immigrant that has enriched Canada. Family will receive friends at Cardinal Funeral Home, Bathurst Chapel, 366 Bathurst Street (Bathurst and Dundas), Toronto, from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, April 30th, 2009; Memorial Service to follow on Friday, May 1st at 11 a.m at Cardinal Funeral Home (366 Bathurst St.). The family is grateful for the superb medical staff at the Toronto General Hospital (UHN), especially to the nursing staff and to physicians Steve Gallinger, Kimon Bonadie, Rob Kriz and Juan Guttierrez. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra would be greatly appreciated."
