SWERHUN, Hryhorij “Harry”. Peacefully at home in Terra Cotta, Ontario on Friday, October 19, 2012. Hryhorij “Harry” Swerhun of Toronto and Terra Cotta in his 93rd year. Beloved husband of Katyryna (née: Koval). Loving father of Irene and her husband Orest Haras of Fenwick and of Christine Kozak of Toronto. Beloved grandfather of Anna Ochrym and her husband Alexander, Katryna Haras, Adrian Kozak and his wife Emma, Natalie Haras, and Alex Kozak. Dear great-grandfather of Theodore, Marcus, and Roxane Ochrym and Isabel Kozak. Hryhorij was born in Suchostav, Ukraine on March 22, 1919. He served in the artillery with the Allied forces in the Second World War, was captured as a prisoner of war, and later escaped to serve again. He married his wife of 67 years, Katyryna, in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. In 1949, they immigrated to Canada with their daughter Irene and settled in Toronto, where Christine was born. Deeply committed to his hopes for a free Ukraine and his faith in God, Hryhorij’s love for his family, homeland, and for Canada touched the lives of many people as he actively worked in many community organizations. His faith, courage, generosity, and humour inspired those who were honoured to know him. He and Katyryna endowed a Ukrainian Catholic church in their home village of Suchostav which was built in the 1990s and currently serves the community and Hryhorij’s extended family there. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, October 23 from 6:00-9:00 pm with Panachyda at 7:00 pm at Cardinal Funeral Home, Annette Chapel, 92 Annette Street, Toronto. Divine Liturgy will take place on Wednesday, October 24 at 10:00 am at Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 4 Bellwoods Avenue, Toronto followed by interment at Park Lawn Cemetery. To honour Hryhorij’s life of devoted service to others, donations may be made to Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute Foundation, St. Paul University, 223 Main Street, Ottawa, K1S 1C4, or to the charity of your choice.Visitation

It was with great sadness that we learned of Mr.Swerhun's passing.We have many fond memories of his wonderful stories and delightful sense of humour.Sincere condolences from Tavie and George, Roman and Fil, Bob and Carol, Yvonne and the entire Fedchyshyn family.
