Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ihor Blyschak. He left this world peacefully with his family by his side on December 12, 2023, at the age of 80.

He will be missed by his beloved wife of 51 years Helena (Shnuriwsky). Devoted father to Kristina and Paul, & father-in-law to Michael and Kristina (‘Meaks’). Brother-in-Law to Igor (Genia) and Vera (Wolodymyr). Uncle to Petro (Olenka), Ronnie, Natalka (Bohdan), Halyna (Alfonso), Andrew (Natalka), Markian (Larysa) and Adrianna (Andrew). Including their beautiful and dear families. Relatives and friends in Canada, USA, and Ukraine.

Ihor was born in Stryj, Ukraine on August 29, 1943. During WWII his family escaped to a refugee camp in Regensburg, Germany. There he lived before emigrating to Montreal, Canada in 1949.

Ihor was fiercely devoted to his family and loved ones and was an exceptionally generous man. Nothing gave him more joy and personal satisfaction than providing for those around him, particularly in the form of family events and shared experiences, whether close to home or farther abroad. He was also an incredibly supportive father and husband, always encouraging and helping his children chase their dreams. Ihor also led by example. He had an incredible work ethic. He had numerous careers, all of them successful. In his 20s, he had work adventures in San Francisco and Papua New Guinea. In the early 80s he managed a ranch in Arizona and could even be called a cowboy. In the latter half of his professional life, he built a thriving footwear manufacturing company: Rallye was his third child, and he was rightfully extremely proud of it. He passed his love of travel onto his children and took trips with them or visited them overseas whenever he could. But his favorite place was the family cottage at Werchowyna. He spent his final summer there, sitting in his smoking chair on the front balcony, talking to people as they passed by. He will be very missed.

The family would also like to extend their gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Toronto Western Hospital for their wonderful support and care during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Camp Werchowyna by e-transfer to [email protected] using password ‘Ihor’. The donor should also send a separate email informing them of their mailing address.

Kristina and Paul, your dad was my best friend for more than 40 years and I miss him terribly. He was so proud of you, every conversation was about his family. He loved the desert and loved being a city "cowboy" here in Arizona. However he truly loved the cabin in the woods and I am so glad he spent this past summer there. I love him and I love you guys and I love you as well Helena. Thank you for taking such good care of him.
