Obituary

Our John died on the morning of March 19, 2019 in Toronto, at the age of 72. He is survived by Susan, his wife of 42 years, and his mother Margaret.  What made John so interesting was that he was interested in so many things, not to mention knowledgeable: “My folks bought the World Book encyclopedia when I was in elementary school and I read the set cover to cover.” (And he seemed to remember all of it!). John remained one course short of his Master’s degree in philosophy because he decided to go to the Canary Islands instead. This is, perhaps, a reflection of his own philosophy. Smart, funny and generous, John was an avid reader who enjoyed watching sports. He liked to support Arsenal in the EPL, “Because a man named Sargant should follow the Gunners!” John was a thoughtful and helpful man, always full of practical suggestions and solutions. He had a penchant for good food and was a great cook. He enjoyed good wines and craft beer. He was a stalwart member of Cask! Toronto and was often seen in the company of his many friends in the local beer community. John was a high school teacher and later, a computer programmer. He was a past volunteer with CNIB, recording books on tape. He was a great husband, brother-in-law, son and friend.
