Svitlana Muchin
John passed away, after a valiant and determined relationship with life, on June 19, 2013 in King City, Ontario. He was born on November 25, 1920 in Odessa, Ukraine. John graduated from the Pervomaisk Pedagogical Institute in Ukraine and from the Moscow Artillery College. After a stint as a truck driver for the American army in Germany, John came to Canada in 1948 and worked in a mine in northern Manitoba. He moved to Winnipeg and, until 1960, was a labourer in the yards of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Actively involved in the Ukrainian community, John met his future wife, Halyna Yanchyk, in 1950 and they were married the following year. In 1956, John proudly received his Canadian citizenship. A lover of classic literature and world history, he earned his Bachelor of Library Science (BLS) at the University of Ottawa in 1962 and Master of Arts (Slavic Studies) at the University of Manitoba in 1972. In 1963, John became the librarian for the Winnipeg firm J. Richardson & Sons. One year later, in 1964, he was appointed Slavic Librarian and Cataloguer at the University of Manitoba and in 1968, became head of the Special Collections Department, a post held until 1990. A significant contribution of John’s to the Slavic Collection was the compilation of a catalogue of all Ukrainian books published in Canada. His Canadiana catalogue is held in the Archives and Special Collections, University of Manitoba. John Muchin published two books: Za viru batkiv uniiaty v khudozhestve Korelenka (1976) and Slavic Collection of the University of Manitoba (1970). He was a member of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Science (UVAN), the Manitoba Library Association, and the Ukrainian Cultural and Education Centre (Oseradok). After his retirement, he moved with his wife Halyna to Ontario to be near his children and grandchildren. John is survived by his wife Halyna Muchin, daughters Svitlana Muchin and Taisa Ballard, son-in-law Colin Lochhead and grandchildren Tavis, Stefan, William and Samantha. Very special thanks to his caregivers at the King City Lodge.
