You are all in our thoughts and meditations during this difficult time. Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die. Joe lives on in all of you. Sending love, Jim and Alyssa Slee

Dear Margaret, Lily and families, We feel a deep sorrow for the loss of a wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather. When we look in the eyes of John Preston & Damien Alexander we can only imagine how strong, faithful and kind they will grow having had a great grandfather like Joe. We still remember going over to Joe’s home and having tea with desserts laid out so specially. Pamela is our beautiful daughter-in-law who has shared many many stories about the impact of her grandfather in her life. Jeff our son was always so warmly welcomed by Joe. He will be greatly missed and remembered always. We say a prayer of comfort and peace for you and your families. Francine and Rick Slee and family

Mr. Joe Barbosa aka the best grandfather in the world Avo was really an exceptional person. He made his family particularly his four grandchildren the centre of his world. He was married to my grandmother, Olidia, for almost 50 years. My grandfather was the kind of man that brought the best out of other people, just watching him in action made you want to become a better person yourself. For example he would help my grandmother clean their house every Saturday, he dedicated many years of his time and money to the church, and he spent all of his free time to help raise his grandchildren. He was our personal chauffeur, our biggest fan and would always marvel at our accomplishments. He was a social man and was probably the only elderly person I knew with a cell phone so his family and friends could reach him while he was out. later in life he purchased a computer with the sole purpose to learn how to watch the soccer games on the internet. My grandmother and him made my childhood a memorable one. I loved going to Portuguese festivals with them, and I always enjoyed coming home to see them on the veranda chatting with their friends. My grandfather was a simple man with strong values who never lost sight of what was important; family. He worked as a janitor and never complained. He was the proudest Canadian I knew, he respected the country that gave him a comfortable life. He learnt how to speak English and could finally read his own mail which was a big accomplishment. He was very creative and a handy man. He could fix just about anything, and he was by our standards an environmentalist at heart. In my lifetime he only had 2 cars( I am 30 years old), he rode the public transportation on a regular basis and walked whenever he could. Avo, rarely ever threw anything out, his dish stand in the kitchen sink even got a repair with some colourful wiring! His life mattered, he was a great man who lead by example and made a difference in my life. I miss you avo, and thank you for all that you have done for me.
