Obituary
Manuel de Sousa Amaral passed away peacefully on Monday, May 15th, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Manuel will be sorely missed. He was a loving husband of 63 years to Elvira Amaral (predeceased) and a devoted father to Anna (Manuel), Brenda, Frank, Dianne (Manuel), and Sandi. Manuel also loved and cherished his grandchildren Clark, Jacqueline, Ethan, Daniel, Christian, Samuel, and Elijah.
Manuel was born on August 13th, 1932 on the island of Sao Miguel, Azores. He was raised as a devoted catholic by his two hardworking parents Manuel Victorino Amaral and Laurinda da Estrela Sousa. Manuel was one of 5 children, Marianna, Teodomiro, Maria de José and Margarida.
Manuel was an incredible man with a taste for adventure. He envisioned his life being one of no limits and yearned for an opportunity that would provide a prosperous future. At the age of 22, Manuel finally found that golden opportunity, one that would change the course of his life forever. Manuel enlisted to work abroad on a family farm in the beautiful province of Quebec. After working tirelessly on the farm, Manuel received word from his brother-in-law that Alcan Aluminium was in search of a man of his talents and work ethic. So, he hopped on the train, journeyed across Canada, and settled in British Columbia.
Throughout his Canadian quest, he crossed paths with many familiar faces he once knew from his hometown. Seeing these faces reminded him of his family whom he missed dearly. It was then that he decided to move to Toronto to join his sister and begin his career at Ontario Hydro. Once he laid roots in Toronto, Manuel ventured back to his hometown to marry the love of his life Elvira. Together, they worked hard to raise 5 beautiful children in their new Toronto home.
Manuel had two prides in his life, his family and his garden. He loved spending hot summer days surrounded by beautiful flowers, and harvesting his own fruits and vegetables. He even had a few pet rabbits and many pigeons. He loved caring for them and feeding them.
Manual loved life. Some might say he was the life of the party! He would do just about anything to make sure everyone had a smile on their face and a glass of his homemade wine in their hand. He hosted many family gatherings and would often break out into song and dance accompanied by his accordion. He always taught his children that family and friends are the most important part of life. Everyone who knew him, knew he was a very supportive and generous man. He always took the time to stop and help, even if you were just a neighbour or someone he didn’t know. He believed that good fortune would always come to those who lend a helping hand. He lived his life by this notion, which was why he always called himself a grateful and fortunate man.
In his final years, he settled in his new home at Kensington Gardens. He loved it there. At every visit you can count on hearing Manuel’s voice echoing down the halls, spreading joy amongst residents. The incredible dedication and support that was provided was always much appreciated. He truly built a new family there and he will be missed.
Manuel, we will miss you dearly. You will forever be in our hearts and minds. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Operation Smile Canada or Kensington Gardens.
