Obituary

Manuel Martins Mendes, at the blessed age of 97, passed away peacefully in to the presence of Jesus at Bridgepoint Active Healthcare in Toronto, Canada on June 10, 2021 with his family by his side.

Manuel was born on August 14, 1923 in Amareleja, Portugal to Manuel Martins Povoa and Isabel Martins Mendes. He was the eldest of 7 siblings; Mariana, Maria Isabel, José, Mario, Marcelino and Joaquina.

Beloved husband of 68 years to Marcelina Simoes Caeiro Mota, loving father to son Mario, daughter-in-law Laura, pre-deceased infant Joaquim and grandfather to Joshua and Nadia who were the joy of his life.

In 1965 Manuel immigrated to Toronto, Canada with his wife and son in pursuit of a better life. However, he never forgot his roots, travelling annually to his homeland to visit his family and many friends – and of course, attend as many bullfights as he could while there!

His generosity, calm demeanor and carefree spirit were amongst his trademarks. He showed hospitality to all and treated everyone with respect and kindness. His smile and laughter was the centre of attention at every family gathering, and will be sorely missed.

Manuel consistently expressed how greatly God had blessed him. He lived a long and beautiful life, surrounded by his entire family whom he loved dearly and the steadfast love of God.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life” – John 6:47

Manuel expressou consistentemente o quanto Deus o abençoou.
