Obituary

MARJAN H. HORHOTA

Passed away on June 17, 2007 in Toronto in his 84th year after a brief struggle with cancer. Beloved husband of Adela for 54 years, father of Irene Ritch (Bocabec, N.B.), George and daughter-in-law Margot (Oakville) and loving dido/grandfather of Natalie. Born in Bortkov, Ukraine, Marjan immigrated to Canada in 1949. After attending Ryerson University, he earned a Bachelor of Library Science degree from the University of Ottawa (1964) and joined the Faculty of the University of Guelph as a Librarian at the McLaughlin Library (1964-1988). But his real passion was working as a tireless advocate of Ukrainian arts and political independence through a lifetime contribution to the Ukrainian community as a leading editor and journalist. Known throughout the International Ukrainian community by his pen name (Marjan Dalney), he co-founded the Organization of Democratic Ukrainian Youth (ODUM) and served as editor of its Young Ukraine magazine. His 20-year (1977-97) tenure as Editor of the Novi Dni (New Days) monthly magazine earned Marjan Horhota international readership. Marjan?s half century of Ukrainian journalism was recognized this year when the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (Kiev, Ukraine) with the Bahriany Foundation published a 550-page book dedicated to Marjan?s writing, selecting from among his over 500 articles, commentaries and speeches and 2,000 pieces of correspondence spanning 1953 to 1996. The letters included those with leading Ukrainian writers, poets, political dissidents, academics and historians. A quiet and unassuming man by nature, Marjan inspired many through his thoughtful writing and dedication to the right of free speech and democratic principles. Friends are invited to the visitations at Cardinal Funeral Home, 366 Bathurst St. on Tuesday, 2 ? 4 p.m. and 6 ? 9 p.m. (Panachida 7:30).
