Obituary

MICHAEL MYROSLAV TOMAS

October 10, 1939 - December 20, 2007

Born in inner-city Toronto. Predeceased by parents Alexandra and Nazar, themselves immigrant survivors of 6 years of global war and civil war (1914 - 1920) in the geopolitical cockpit of Eastern Europe. Educational product of Chas. G. Fraser Elementary School, Parkdale C.I., Toronto Teachers' College, University of Kyiv and U. of T. Taught at Givens Elementary School, West Park SS, Head of Guidance and ESL at Jones St. School A multi-faceted, charismatic person of many talents. A bon vivant, yet disciplined aesthete with a working knowledge of 8 European languages. Gifted with a streak of deliriously insane, comedic genius that would have put Monty Python out of business, had it gone public. Archetypal patron of things Ukrainian - especially in the cultural sphere, as evinced by his active support for music, dance, literature and sponsorship of numerous art exhibitions. An inveterate traveller, he never married, preferring to distribute his largess to needy friends and relatives in Eastern Europe which he managed to visit on scores of occasions. Ever the sanguine stoic, in his latter years he greeted the alarming deterioration of his various bodily organ-systems with jocular insouciance and died at peace, while holidaying in Cuba. Michael is survived in Canada by his loving brothers Paul, Ronald (his fraternal twin), Norm, Dennis and George; sisters-in-law Audrey and Diane, nephews Chris, Jon and Anthony, nieces Lisa, Vivian and Stacey and grand-niece Alex-Marie. Friends may call at the Cardinal Funeral Home, 92 Annette Street (east of Keele Street) on Friday, January 4, 2008, from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Funeral service commencing from the funeral home on Saturday, January 5, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at St. Volodymyr Cemetery, 1280 Dundas Street West, Oakville, Ontario. Instead of flowers, memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
