Obituary

At the age of 93 on March 18th, 2022, our loving father, grandfather and great grandfather, Michele Maccarone passed away surrounded by his children Isabel, Anna, Michelantonio (Tony), Leonardo and Elena.

Michele was the fourth of eight children born to Michelantonio and Isabella Maccarone in Caprino, Puglia, Italy on May 23rd, 1928.  As a young boy, Michele worked on his family farm in Orta Nova and sold vegetables and other goods to the town.

It was in the town of Orta Nova when Michele first saw Carmela Basso. Michele married Carmela on December 27th, 1952 and later had three children while living in Italy.

In 1961, with his older brother (Tomasso), Michele ventured to Toronto, Canada to find work and prepare a life for his family.  Ten months later in 1962, Carmela came with her children to join her husband, Michele.  Michele and Carmela bought their only home in 1964 and had two more children.  They lived happily in this home up until 2021.

Michele was a charismatic, hardworking man who prided himself on his work ethic and his family. Once he retired from working as a foreman at Midas, he became actively involved in a seniors’ club (Circolo dell’Anziano, Le Caravelle) and later served as President for many years. Michele always wanted to learn more about technology and could always be counted on to give a heartwarming speech at any occasion.

Michele’s favourite pastimes were his days at the senior clubs, reading the newspaper (Corriere Canadese) and watching soccer.  Michele liked to joke around and make his grandchildren laugh.

Michele is survived by his loving family.  Children: Isabel (Sam), Anna (Mario), Tony (Ilda), Leonardo (Tracy), Elena (Raffaele), Grandchildren; Robert (Susie), Diane, James (Amanda), Mark (Amrin), Amanda (David), Rachel (Elias), Alexander (Jessie), Adam, Christopher, Christian, Emma and Jeremy, Great Grandchildren; Sienna, Lorenzo, Logan, Charbel and another baby boy on the way.

Michele will be remembered for his wise words and lessons through his various speeches that he gave not only to his family, but to his friends.

We will miss him greatly but are comforted knowing he is reunited with his dearly departed wife, Carmela.

In lieu of flowers, to honour the memory of Michele Maccarone, you may wish to make a donation in his name to Kensington Health Foundation

To the Maccarone Family: We just learned about the passing of your Father/Grandfather. My parents always spoke highly of your parents. Both couples married in the same year and celebrated their 50th wedding Anniversary in the same year. The connection was special. Today and always, may loving memories bring you peace, comfort and strength. We are blessed to have received their wisdom and for teaching us the importance of values. With heartfelt condolences, The Fusillo Family (Michele & Concetta)

You have brought so much strength to our family, offering guidance and support and a passion for life that inspired so many of us to strive to become better versions of ourselves. you have touched the lives of so many people over the years with your kindness, generosity and welcoming heart. You have always been a positive role model for our family. Your words of wisdom were always the highlight of every time we got together and will forever be ingrained in our hearts. I have so many fond memories of our time together From family gatherings to our trips to Florida that I will always cherish. My Nonno was such a positive, loving soul and had very strong work ethic. What made him happy was to spend time with his family and see us smile. He appreciated the simple things in life and that taught me to really live in the moment and have fun. Memories that I will never forget are my surprise vists to the club when I was younger and how happy and proud he would be to see me. The countless times he took to explain to me how to play card games, and then playing with me for fun. The love he had for his family and for everything he did. The strength he had, and the persistance to continue to be optomisitic and joyful. As well as the focus he had on his health and wellbeing in his older years. I am forever grateful that he had the chance to meet my baby Charbel. I will treasure these memories, and all of my memories with him forever. With so much love always. Forever in my heart. Love you Nonno. I know your with Nonna looking down on us all.

March 18, 2022 we lost the head of the Maccarone family…Nonno Mikey. Nonno showed us all what life was about. Life’s about taking risks. Nonno did that when he left Nonna Carmela in Italy to start a life here in Canada to which Nonna came a year after. Almost always serious, when he spoke, you listened. When he gave advice, you listened. When he gave his long speeches, we listened. Nonno was extremely charismatic and social. The countless days I spent with him and my Nonna are forever engraved in my mind, heart and spirit. I will never forget the trips to 7-Eleven giving his grandchildren all a choice to pick out 1 to 2 things that we wanted to buy or the walks back when he would try to scare us as a joke (ha-ha not!). He would always make sure his grandchildren were happy and laughing. What I’m going to miss most of all is our banter back-and-forth. He taught all of us about hard-work and taking chances. I will take this with me through my life. I am grateful to have spent 39 years knowing and loving him. I will miss you Nonno but I know Nonna was waiting on you. 💙
