Obituary

Mychajlo Truszyk peacefully took his last breath on February 16, 2024, surrounded by family just days after joyously celebrating his 100th birthday.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Carmela Truszyk (nee Vigliotta), his devoted daughters Ola Bodnar (nee Truszyk) and Tina Truszyk-Oleksiw (Bob), and cherished grandchildren Alana, Michael, Jane, and Julia. The love of his family provided comfort in those final moments, as he prepared to reunite with his eldest predeceased daughter, Maria (+2009).

Born in Barysh, Ukraine, Mychajlo’s life unfolded as a testament to his unshakable human spirit. In his century-long journey, he emerged resilient from the shadows of World War II, lived as a displaced person in a DP-camp in Rimini, Italy, and found love in England, where he lovingly raised two daughters.

Taking a daring chance, he sold everything and embarked on a new chapter in Toronto Canada, where he welcomed another daughter into the world. A tireless provider, Mychajlo worked the night shift to ensure his children could enjoy a full life. Without any blood ties of his own around, he surrounded himself and his loved ones with friends who became family. Mychajlo instilled in his children the importance of community, igniting a deep appreciation for their Ukrainian heritage, and made sure they understood where they came from. He made their education a priority and ensured they were surrounded by good people.

Through the tapestry of his life, Mychajlo celebrated many happy milestones of marriage and grandchildren, yet he also endured the heartache of death and sorrow. Through it all, his unwavering faith in God always provided him strength and solace.

Mychajlo’s children and grandchildren are his legacy. He placed family above all else and they are the beneficiaries of all his sacrifices and hard work. Their success has been achieved from standing on the shoulders of this strong, determined, and dependable man.

As we bid farewell to a life well-lived, Mychajlo’s impact will echo for generations to come. His legacy of love, resilience, and familial devotion will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of sharing his journey. May he rest in eternal peace. Вічная Пам’ять

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the dedicated caregivers who provided invaluable support during Mychajlo's later years. A heartfelt thank you extends to Olha, Ivanka, and the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre for the unwavering attention and respect they bestowed upon him in his final days. Before this chapter, Mychajlo found happiness and comfort in the sunset of his life, embracing the assisted living community at Ivan Franko Homes, where he discovered a newfound passion for painting. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Ivan Franko "Campus of Care" fund. Your generosity will contribute to ensuring that future generations of seniors can experience the fulfilling lifestyle and compassionate care that brought comfort to Mychajlo in his later years.
