Obituary

Sabino Mendes was the loving husband of the late Natividade Lidia Figueira Goncalves, the father of John, Michael, Anthony, Lidia and the late Joseph. Sabino was the grandfather of Matthew, Sarah, Catherine, Theresa and Adam, step grandchildren Jesse and Elizabeth, great step-grandchildren Alex, Abigail, Juliana and Shelby. He is one of the original Portuguese Pioneers from Madeira who immigrated to Canada on June 2nd, 1953, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax on the Nea Hellas. He is also one of the original members of the Madeira Club. He loved spending his days playing cards, associating with Seniors in his most recent community Bolton, and spending time with his family whenever he could. During the summer he enjoyed spending a lot of his time in his vegetable garden. He is very proud to have been given the opportunity to live in this proud country we all love, Canada. It was rumored in the local community that he was “the pope”, as most of them would have seen him riding around in his safety-fortified scooter. He has left a lasting impression with most people he recently met. Finally, he would like to thank his most recent family physician, Dr. S Sivapalan, who provided him with the greatest care, and the medical staff at the William Osler Health Center in Brampton, particularly the Cardiology ward where he spent his final weeks.

I found a poem about fathers that reminded me of my dad with all the referwnces to farming. Please enjoy. Memories of Dad Author Unknown I will take this special moment To turn my thoughts to Dad Thank him for the home he gave For all the things we had. We think about the fleeting years Too quickly, gone for good It seems like only yesterday I’d go back if I could. A time when Dad was always there, No matter what the weather. Always strong when things went wrong He held our lives together. He strived so hard from day to day And never once complained. With steady hands, he worked so hard And kept the family name. He taught us that hard work pays off, You reap just what you sow. He said that if you tend your crops, Your field will overflow. My life has been bountiful He taught me how to give In his firm and steadfast way He taught me how to live. Dad dwells among the angels now He left us much too soon He glides across a golden field Above the harvest moon. I see him in the summer rain, He rides upon the wind And when my path is beaten down He picks me up again.
