Obituary
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Alexandrina Coelho, our loving mother and avo. After a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s disease, she passed away peacefully on April 7, 2024 in her 93rd year, surrounded by her loving family.
Alexandrina passed away at Kensington Gardens, her home for over 5 years. The staff there cared deeply for her and were remarkable. They treated her as they would their own mom and we are very thankful for their care and love.
Alexandrina leaves behind her husband Faustino Coelho, her daughters Maria de Fatima Arezes (Joe Arezes) and Helena Coelho (Ronald Abbott), her grandchildren Richard Arezes (Jennifer Arezes), Christine Jastrebski (Malcolm Jastrebski) and Christopher Carvalho, and her great grandchildren, William and Evelyn Arezes and Henry and Nora Jastrebski.
Alexandrina was born in Villa Verde, Portugal on November 26th, 1930. She met and married Faustino Coelho in Lisbon and they began their family life. The family immigrated to Canada in 1968. They settled in Toronto and Alexandrina dedicated her life to caring for her family. She loved her daughters with all her heart and later she cared for all her grandchildren. Her great grandchildren were fortunate to have met their great grandmother, but unfortunately Alzheimer’s deprived her of the opportunity to really know them.
Alexandrina loved to laugh and she had a saucy sense of humour. She loved hosting and cooking for family and friends. She was an awesome cook. She had a weak spot for coffee and she would go as often as possible with her daughters for coffee around the neighbourhood. She loved to knit and sew and watch her favourite hockey team – the Toronto Maple Leafs. She was very creative. Although Alexandrina did not have the opportunity to get much of a formal education, she was a very intelligent woman and very independent. God blessed her with many talents.
Alexandrina loved to travel to Portugal and was fortunate to spend time with family members and friends, including her sisters Deolinda, Engracia, Maria and Carolina, all of whom have since passed away.
Alexandrina will be sorely missed but we are so grateful for all the times we had with her and the memories shared. Until we meet again.
Family and friends wishing to make a floral or memorial donation are asked to consider March of Dimes or Alzheimer Society of Canada and would be greatly appreciated by the family.
