Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Alice “Lesia” Kushny. Born on Nov. 15, 1933 to Dmytro & Stephania Chruszcz (Nedozytko) in Winnipeg, Alice died peacefully on Dec. 13, 2020. Lesia is survived by her husband of 64 years, Eugene, the love of her life, whom she met on a blind date in Trinity Bellwoods Park. They shared a love like no other. Alice was a devoted and loving mother to Alicia Wiedemann (John), Donna Simpson (John), James (Helen), a proud and nurturing Baba to Yvonne (Sam), John Kalvin (Keely), Jonah, Joshua, Edith, Hazel, an adoring PraBaba to Winter Rose, Forest, Sammy and Ella.   Alice grew up with her parents on a farm in Grimsby, Ontario. After the birth of her sister, Olya, whom she was very close to, the family moved to Toronto where Alice attended Bloor Collegiate. Alice was on the basketball team and the cheerleading squad. After graduating, Alice worked in Lake Louise with her best friend Connie, where they met Marilyn Monroe and Robert Mitchum on set. Alice then worked at the Spadina Avenue Medical Labs followed by Bell Canada, where she eventually took on a managerial role in Computer Communications, played on their softball team and made many lifelong friends.   Alice loved to travel and had her dream two-month long honeymoon cruise throughout Europe. She visited family in Australia, Ukraine, the US and Canada and also toured Kuala Lumpur, Alaska and the Caribbean.   Throughout her life, Lesia has given of herself, unselfishly and without hesitation, to her family, friends and community. Family, those near and far, meant everything to Alice and she would do anything and everything for them. Alice was very involved with Swansea P.S., Humberside C.I., St. Josaphat’s Church, Ukrainian National Federation and Kalyna choir. Alice was an accomplished artist, who loved gardening, camping in Cape Cod and desserts. Alice’s laughter and smile would fill and brighten a room. She always remembered everyone’s birthdays or days of celebration and would phone, sing and/or write a note to those she loved.

Lesia will forever be in our hearts and we know that she is an angel among the angels.

“Love you Lesia”

My condolences to Eugene and family and Olga and family, as well as the cousins. I have fond memories when we were all children playing and visiting with our parents on the farm her parents had in Grimsby right across from Tomkiws . All of our immigrant parents worked so hard during those early years so that we “kids”could grow and have an easier life. It is wonderful to read about the full life that Alice lived. Vichnaya Pamyat. Sincerely, Natalia KItt (Rogowski), Estero Florida, US

Dear Donna, John, Jonah & Joshua, and family members. We were so shocked and saddened to hear of Alice’s passing this past Sunday. Our memories of her, are a bright smile, and twinkling eyes. She was always interested in our lives when we met her, at an event at your home, or sometimes encountering her in BloorWest Village, usually at John’s office. She was always curious about anyone in your ‘orbit’. Our memories will be of her ‘Joie de Vivre’, her boundless energy, and her care & concern, as well as her prayers for us....especially during our most challenging times. Yes, your sad loss is Heaven’s gain. Certainly singing with all the Angel’s now and we are certain, looking down from Heaven, with so much pride for her Children, their partners, Grandchildren, and Great Grandchildren. We are so blessed to have known her, even for the short time we could spend in her presence. Blessings to all of your family at this painful time of loss....Alicia, James and their family, thinking of you too. We are also sending our Love to Eugene, and hoping that you can find peace, and hope that one day, all of your family, will be together again in the presence of God. Lord love Alice, and welcome her home. Our heartfelt condolences from Simpson’s North
