Obituary

Alice Victoria Caragata (nee Britten), a longtime Regina teacher, died Thursday, August 2, 2012, in Toronto. She was 83 years old. Vicki, as she was known, was the loving mother of Sean (Renee Kerman), Sharon (Michele Wong), Lea (David Checkland) and Warren (Laurenne Garneau), and grandmother to Charlotte, Alexandra and Nathaniel. She had been married and divorced to Steve Caragata, who died in 1998. She was pre-deceased by her brother Dr. Edward James Britten of Brisbane, Australia, and her dear mother, Alice, and father, Edward Britten. Vicki was born in Regina, Saskatchewan July 11, 1929. She attended Central Collegiate and Regina College. Following her marriage and the birth of her first son Warren, the young family moved to Edmonton, where her daughters Lea and Sharon were born. Sean arrived after the family had returned to Regina in the 1960s. Vicki took great pride in being of a generation of women who balanced motherhood with having a successful career. In her early life she worked for the Provincial Architect of Alberta and University of Regina Registrar's Office. Following her divorce, Vicki returned to school to earn her teacher's certificate. She began her new career as a teacher at the School for the Deaf in Saskatoon, then commenced a 20-year career with the Regina Public School Board, where she taught at Victoria, George Lee, Rosemont, Thomson and Coronation Park schools. Vicki excelled in teaching students with physical and developmental disabilities. She also taught for many years in the inner city of Regina, and was sensitive to the cultural needs of urban First Nations and Aboriginal students. She returned to school again, studying Cree and Aboriginal Studies part-time, eventually earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Regina. During her teaching career, Vicki was an active member of the Regina Public School Teachers Association and Saskatchewan Teachers Federation. She was also a prolific writer and long time member of the Saskatchewan Writers Guild. She was a strong believer in social justice and a great supporter of the New Democratic Party. The family would like to thank the staff of Hazelton Place Retirement Home, West Park Long Term Care Home, private personal support staff, and many friends who helped support and care for Vicki during her illness. Service of remembrance will be held Monday, August 6, 2012, at 11:00 am, with visitation from 10 am to 11 am at Cardinal Funeral Home, 366 Bathurst Street, Toronto, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, donations would be welcomed to Doctors Without Borders, or the Regina Food Bank.
