Maticiw, Danica “Nellie” (nee: Mahovlich) - It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Nellie, our mother, at St. Joseph’s Health Care Centre on December 7, 2012 at the age of 79. Nellie was the proud mother of Kim, Casey (Catherine) and Dean (Jennifer). Loving Baba to Madison, Hunter, Nicole, Oliver, the late Parker and our new arrival Langdon. Beloved wife for over 50 years to the late Myron Duke. Mom is survived by her sister Mary and brothers John and Joe. Pre-deceased by her brothers Charlie, George and Nick. We’d like to thank Dr. Vanek and the amazing nurses and staff at St. Joseph’s Health Centre for their kind, caring and professional support over the past few years. A visitation will be held at Cardinal Funeral Home, 92 Annette St. (just east of Keele) on Wednesday, December 12th from 2 – 4 p.m. and 7 – 9 p.m. Panachyda at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Cardinal Funeral Home on Thursday, December 13th at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Park Lawn Cemetery (Bloor & Prince Edward). I will always remember and cherish memories of visiting Aunty Nellie and Uncle Duke as I was growing up, I always had so much fun at their place! Nellie will forever be missed, but I know she and Duke are reunited in heaven and surely are having a great time up there together looking down on all of us! My thoughts and prayers are with you all, and I hope to see you and reunite with you all soon.

Just a little note to share with you all once again how grateful I am for all of the love and support shown to me through the years through your mom and dad's loving kindness, and to all my family too. Your mom taught us all that sharing is caring through all the warm hospitality, wonderful meals, special occasions, invites, and supportive phone calls. I am very grateful for the wonderful friendship that your mom shared with my mom, and the love she showed to my mom through the many phone calls made to my mom when she moved back to Winnipeg. Paul, my dad, and Duke, were one of a kind, and I am sure they are sharing chuckles and laughter in heaven. Your mom Nellie, to me will always be a guardian angel to all of us. Her big sisterly advice has always set me straight and given me strength and hope. Nellie for me is a role model for life, and as I strive to become more like your mom I know I will experience one of the greatest successes and happinesses in life that extends to everyone and lasts forever. Your mother's funeral was so beautiful and the reunion so joyful. I am looking forward to getting our families together and reuniting in the future.

It breaks my heart to not be there with you all at this time. Aunt Nel was such a sweetheart- always asking for you to sit and eat and giving you everything you could possibly ask for, even when you didn't ask for it. I'll never forget when I returned to Calgary many, many years ago and she sent glorious shishkakbobs with me on the plane, wrapped in foil! The plane went crazy with the aroma of pure culinary greatness-and I didn't even have to share! We hope you know that even though we are time zones away we are with you in sympathy and send thoughts, prayers and love to each of you. I love you Aunt Nel.
