Obituary

Dolores Do Monte Alves, 88, of Toronto passed away peacefully at 4:45 am on Monday, Aug.24, 2015 at the Kensington Gardens long term care facility. She was born on Aug.15, 1927 in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal on the feast day of Nossa Senhora Do Monte. She was married in 1953 to her loving husband Jose Manual Alves who predeceased her on Jan.25, 1988. Also predeceasing her were her parents Maria and Jose Gomes, her sister Maria de Sousa and her three brothers, Manual, Carlos and Jose Gomes. Dolores was the loving mother of her daughter Fatima (son-in-law Don Hyde) and son Joe (partner Theresa Swenson) and devoted grandmother to Danielle (husband Jon Lloyd) and Andrew. Dolores came to Canada in 1955 in pursuit of a better life. Together with her husband and strong determination, many sacrifices and hard work, her family was able to prosper. Dolores worked for many years in the dietary department of Princess Margaret Hospital. Her pleasures in life included gardening and spending time with her family and friends - in the early years with her children at Madeira Park and in the later years with her grandchildren, including several spring holidays in Florida. Visitation will take place at 2-4 and 6-9 pm on Wednesday, Aug.26 at the Cardinal Funeral Home (366 Bathurst, just north of Dundas St.) and the funeral service will be at 9:45 am Thurs. Aug.27 at St. Mary’s Parish (130 Bathurst St.), followed by burial at the Holy Cross Cemetery (near Yonge and Highway 7). Following the burial, friends and family are welcome for refreshments at Fatima’s home in Etobicoke. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Kensington Gardens for their loving care of Dolores over the last three years and would like them to be considered for any donations.
