Obituary

Ella Showkewych of Toronto, ON  passed away peacefully on May 15 2020 with her daughter and son at her side. Mama (mother) to Orysia (Edward) and Roman, Baba (grandmother) to Andrew (Joanne) , Tiarella Tatanya and Everett (Lauren), Pre-Baba (great-grandmother) to Weston and Desmond.  She was predeceased by her loving husband John of 68 years. Borne in the Ukraine and of Austrian descent, Ella immigrated to Canada in 1948 with her Tante (Aunt) Helene and initially settled in Montreal.

Ella was extremely hardworking, fun loving, kind and friendly. She enjoyed singing, playing guitar, gardening, hosting dinner parties and dancing with her husband John at various Ukrainian venues and later in life added looking after her grandchildren, Taichi and walks in High Park. Her most favourite was swimming and basking in the sun with John and friends at Wasaga Beach, Florida and Aruba and "pypenky" (mushroom) picking with the gang. She was an extremely talented seamstress and an amazing strongly spirited woman!

The last years of Mama's life were a struggle and we are extremely thankful to her dedicated array of PSWs who cared for her at home. We are also thankful to the staff of St. Josephs Healthcare Center, Toronto.

We miss you Mama but you will always be in our heart and soul!

A private service will be held at St Volodomyr's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Joseph’s Healthcare Center, Toronto would be appreciated,  thank you.

Hi Orysia and Roman. We are very sorry to hear about your Mother. She was a very energetic and lovely person. She sewed many things for us in her closet and she was so fast. Christina and Alexandra Gula.

Dear Rysa, Roman and Family we learned from Luisa that your mother died a few days ago. We are sincerely sorry and we send you our heartfelt condolences. We hope that your family will give you strength and comfort to get over this awful loss. It is always difficult to understand that one`s beloved mother suddenly disappears from your life forever. But the many beautiful memories of her will remain in your heart and thus, she will always stay a part of your life. It is also so good to know that Luisa had the chance to get to know Elli because you generously welcomed her within your family for a year and treated her like one of your own children. We will never forget that and will always be very thankful for that especially as this was a very important step in Luisa`s life. From what Luisa told us, she liked Ella a lot. We wish you and your family that you stand together and support each other in those difficult times. We think of you and wish you the best. Love Oleg & Irene
