Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Halyna Bonk. Halyna was born in Velyka Plavucha, Ternopil, Ukraine – the daughter of Ivan and Tekla Lesiw. In 1948, Halyna immigrated to Canada with her parents and married John Bonk (deceased) in 1950. She was lovingly devoted to her family and raised three children, Lydia (Oleh – deceased) Bendiuha, Roman (Lesia) Bonk, Myron (Jane) Bonk. Baba will be missed by her grandchildren, Tanya (Chris Hartin) Bendiuha, Mark Bendiuha, Christina (Chris) Botticella, Anastasia (Frank) Pacheco, Mathew and Nicholas Bonk, and great grandchildren Alexander and Arianna Hartin. Halyna was a successful business person and held many leadership roles within the Ukrainian community. She embraced her life in Canada while remaining a Ukrainian patriot. As part of her love of the Ukrainian culture, Halyna spent countless hours passionately embroidering and preparing Ukrainian culinary delicacies. She was also an avid reader of Ukrainian literature and history. Halyna’s family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre. Halyna is resting at the Cardinal Funeral Home, Annette Chapel. Visitations are on Tuesday March 28th, 2-4pm, 6-9pm. Panachyda 7:30pm. Funeral mass will be at Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre Chapel, on Wednesday March 29th, 10am. Interment to follow at Prospect Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Toronto Ukrainian Foundation- Holodomor Memorial Project or the Alzheimer’s Society.
