Obituary

JOSETTE ESTEBAN A veteran Toronto educator, loyal friend, and lover of good food, wine and French language and culture, Josette Esteban, who was born near Bordeaux, France, and raised there and in Montreal, has left us at age 70. Josette’s passing on November 25, 2016 in the palliative care unit of the Michael Garron (Toronto East General) hospital came as a consequence of an increasingly debilitating illness. Cremation has taken place. A fervent Roman Catholic whose faith rallied her throughout her lifetime, she was a member of the congregation of St. Francis of Assisi parish in Little Italy, Toronto. Widowed since 2002 from her beloved husband, former teacher and University of Toronto graduate, and accomplished Toronto actor, Walter Bolton, Josette formed with him what was for both of them the bond of a lifetime. The couple, who met in 1975, had no children but a litany of experiences and a trove of happy moments. Unpretentious, erudite, and passionate in defending her opinions on a variety of topics, Josette was a member of the Ontario Retired Teachers’ Association, having taught at Northern Secondary and Harbour Collegiate in Toronto. She much admired the French Emperor Napoleon I, and enjoyed visiting Toronto’s Chinatown to shop for small, pretty things. With parents deceased, Josette leaves her aunt, Felicia Hernando of Montreal, and first cousin, Gerard Hernando of Toronto, close friends, John Shaw and Audrey Apostolov of Toronto, as well as relatives in France. A funeral mass will take place at St. Francis church on Saturday December 10, 2016, at 9:30 a.m. No flowers. Donations to the Kidney Foundation of Canada would be appreciated.
