Obituary

LENA SOLOMON (nee CASSICK) March 10, 1926 - January 15, 2013 Lena quietly and peacefully joined her beloved husband, Andy on Tuesday evening. Mom was a self-reliant go-getter who, after becoming a young widow, began and ran a successful grocery business and later went into the cash register business. As the manager of "Jensen Cash Register", Lena travelled to many parts of the world including Monte Carlo, Italy and Denmark. Mom was an avid bowler, winning many awards, including the Manitoba Tenpin Federation's High Single Award in 2002, with her championship team the "Alleycats". As a child Mom enjoyed playing hockey and baseball. At the age of 60 she took up golf and played with her sons and grandchildren until her health began to fail her. In her later years, she was an avid Blue Jays and Leafs fan. Mom was born in Sheho, Saskatchewan and was raised in Kamsack. She moved to Toronto at the age of sixteen where she met Andy, fell in love, and raised her family. She moved to Winnipeg about ten years ago to reunite with family and recently has been living quietly at Avondale Retirement Residence back in Toronto. She was the daughter of Mary Lapitsky and Sam Cassick. After Sam's untimely passing, her Mom remarried Nick Lapitsky. Mom was predeceased by her brother Mike Cassick (Annette), Annie Cassick (Nick), Eva Wishnevetski (Mike), Nellie Cottes (Tony), and Andy Lapitsky (Pauline). Lena is survived by her siblings, Adam Lipitsky (Mary), Mary Jacuta (Boris) and Kay Lubiniecki (Tony). Lena will be greatly missed and remembered by her three sons, Allan (Carolyn), Jim (Elaine) and Andy (Victoria). Her four grandchildren Edward (Sherry), William (Kiara), Jack and Maggie will miss her smiles, good humour and generosity. Visitation will take place on Sunday, January 20th at Cardinal Funeral Home, 92 Annette St., between 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Panachyda at 3:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Volodymyr Cathedral on Monday, January 21st at 9:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Prospect Cemetery. We wish to express our deepestsympathies to all family members. Although we have never been to Toronto we have visited aunty at her home in Winnipeg. We have many fond memories of aunty Lena (Horse & buggy rides at our place, visit's at Baba's or aunty Eva's home, and our 25th anniversary where we were given a Silver tea set that Doug polishes to this day) The best things in life are the people we know, the places we've been and the memories we've made along the way. We will cherish our memories of her.
