Obituary
We sadly announce the passing of Lydia Caine at Lakeshore Lodge Nursing Home in Etobicoke on April 6, 2023, at the age of 84. Lydia peacefully left this world to be with the Lord, and is reunited in heaven with her parents, Wasyl and Anastasia Mroz, her husband Bruce Caine Sr., her brother Walter Mroz, and grandson Jordan Caine.
Dear mother to Bruce Caine Jr. (Tamara) and Daniel Caine (Jo-Ann). Cherished grandmother of Justin, Jesse and Natalia. Survived by her siblings Luba Baranow, Kazimierz Mroz and Sophie Dixon.
Lydia was born in Russia on March 6, 1939, and emigrated to Toronto in 1951. She grew up in Bloor West Village. After they married, they purchased a farm in Wilsonville, Ontario and later settled into their long-time family home in Etobicoke. There she had a huge garden that she absolutely loved and spent hours in it, planting, weeding, watering and picking all the fruits and vegetables that she shared with family and friends, and at their dinner table.
Gardening was just a small part of what Lydia did in her spare time. She was a passionate doll artist, and was part of a doll club at Franklin Horner Community Centre. Lydia also spent her time going on artistic retreats across Canada and the USA. Lydia took many self interest courses like calligraphy, learning Hebrew, preparing sushi, felting, tatting, ceramics, stained glass, polymer clay art, sewing, knitting and painting just to name a few. Through all these artistic and creative adventures, she amassed a large number of friends. She also loved her annual spring treks up north to go mushroom picking and belonged to the Toronto Mycological Society. In addition, Lydia began writing her memoirs and enjoyed gathering information about her ancestry and family in Russia. Visitation at Cardinal Funeral Home (92 Annette Street, Toronto), on Monday, April 10th at 10:00 a.m. to noon and will be followed by a Funeral Service at 12 noon. Lydia was a long-time member of Queensway Cathedral and the family is honoured to have Pastor Ralph Rutledge officiate at the funeral service.
One of Lydia’s favourite poems, by John A. Banks:
My Love – My Life
One more year has passed us by
We’ve crossed another mile
And as I think of what’s ahead
My mind begins to smile
It seems we’ve walked the road alone
And fought the wind and dust
But now the flowers begin to bloom
In climates we can trust
I do not care how dark the skies
I’ll brave them end to end
As long as I can be with you
My very special friend
