Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maria De Fatima Lopes Freitas, our loving mother and avó. After a short battle with cancer and dementia, she passed peacefully at the age of 91.

As she joins her loving husband, Manuel De Freitas in heaven, Fatima leaves behind her daughter, Manuela Da Conceição Lopes Freitas Sequeira, her son, Jose Manuel Lopes Freitas and her granddaughter, Sarah Lucília Freitas Sequeira.

Fatima was the eldest of three siblings, Jose Da Rocha Lopes (Conceição Coelho) and Conceição Lopes Câmara (deceased Óscar Câmara). Fátima was also the loving aunt of Francisco Câmara, Cristina Lopes Ormonde (Jose Antonio Ormonde), Oscar Câmara (Juliana Silva), Luís Filipe Câmara (Dora Meneses Câmara).

Fatima emigrated from Terceira, Azores, Portugal in 1971 to Toronto, Ontario, Canada with her two children by her side, to join her husband that had immigrated in 1970. Fatima embraced living in her new home but always had a passion for preserving the traditions of her beautiful Terceira. Fatima was a seamstress by trade; however, her talents included knitting, embroidery, and crochet.

As a hobby, Fatima volunteered a majority of her time at Sport Clube Lusitânia and Casa dos Açores of Ontario, where she practised the various traditions of her home island. Fatima had great faith in the Holy Spirit.

Fatima will be greatly missed by her family and friends. May she rest in eternal peace.

Bernadette da Costa Winberg
Manuela, Joe and Sarah, On behalf of my family I send our deep condolences. Your mother had a special space in our hearts. Many years ago for a brief time we all shared a small house that had much love. Although, my parents were landlords and your parents tenants, in no time we were all just family. As your family's needs changed your family moved. Mom said that your mom and her were in tears the day of the move, as they had become like sisters. A few years later we bought a larger home, and when your mom come for a visit she said" if you had this house a few years ago I would never have left your family". However, my Dad said " but then you Manuel and the kids would not have bought your very own beautiful home". This was and is the relationship, two families happy for each others successes and being there for each others hard times. I will always remember you mom's joyous nature, great sense of humour and loving attitude. I always liked her accent which was different than my parents.and as a kid I found it super cool. May she Rest in Peace and be reunited with your wonderful Father in heaven Bernadette da Costa Winberg and family.
