Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Nebesio, our loving and devoted mother, at the age of 99, on April 26, 2024.

Born April 7, 1925 in Bozhykiv, Ukraine to Mykola and Yulia Boyko, Maria came to Canada in 1948 seeking a better life. She first lived in Vancouver before coming to Toronto, where she married and settled to raise her family.

Our mother was an educator, and was adored by her students. She taught at several Ukrainian schools before embarking on a career as a Teaching Assistant at the Toronto Board of Education, with her last position being at Swansea Public School.

Throughout her life, Maria was a strong supporter of Ukrainian culture and art, and accumulated an art collection that was envied by many. Maria loved music and could be heard every day singing her favourite songs. She was a prolific writer and poet, with some of her work published.

Our mother was a patriot and instilled a true love and respect for all things Ukrainian in her children that will endure for the rest of our lives. She was very proud of her children and would tell everyone the same at every opportunity.

Maria is predeceased by her husband Andrij, and is survived by her loving children Andrij (Mary) and Christine.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute Foundation U of T would be greatly appreciated

We would also like to thank the staff at the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre for their kind and caring attention to our mother.

Vichnaya Pamyat!

Sorry to hear about your mom Andy. It’s been a million years since the LKS/ECI days, but I do remember meeting her a long time ago. Glad you had a lengthy time with your mom. You used to go by Numbo. Jack Jamieson
