Obituary

Our dearest mother, Mrs. Marie Turko, passed on to another life on November 12, 2016. Born Marie-Clarie Wilhelmina Antoinette LaLiberte on August 3, 1927 to “Toronto Girl” Gladys Yates and Quebecois Artisan Jean-Emile LaLiberte. “Tootsie” grew up in the Annex with “Buster” her brother Jack and lived nearby all her life. She attended Loretto Abbey and Central Tech High School studying commercial art. For a while she worked in the same firm as the artist C.W. Jefferys. Eventually she wed Michael Turko an Ukrainian Canadian railroad man and moved to a house on Davenport Rd. which would be her home for 63 years. It was a house, she reminisced, that she’d seen while seated on a stone wall beneath Spadina House on her lunch breaks at a long ago summer job. In that same house she raised 3 children, a son, Evon and 2 daughters, Cathy and Paula. Catherine married Peter Kozachenko and there are 2 grandsons, Daniel and Thomas. Survivors also include a niece and nephew. Our Little Mother was a loving and dutiful wife for 54 years, many of them absorbed caring for Michael, partially disabled in a serious industrial accident. Together they shared the beauty of 2 acquisitions; a Muskoka cottage on Gibson Lake and the Liturgy of St. Elias Ukrainian Catholic Church in Brampton; they bought the first in 1977 and shared in the foundation of the latter in 1978. It was a life circumscribed in detail but vast in patience, loving kindness and expectation of the best in all circumstances. Cancer tallied the total of her life, but the sum of love and hope was far greater. She was a gentle leaf who left its lodgement in the November wind. God grant you rest, dearest Mother. The service of Panachyda will take place Monday, November 14th at 7:30 p.m. at St. Elias Ukrainian Catholic Church (Bovaird and Heritage), Brampton. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, November 15th at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Parish Cemetery. The family thanks the staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for their kindness and care. Please donate to your favourite charity in her memory.
