Obituary

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, Teresa Margarida Teles da Silva. Teresa passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 5th, 2024 at the age of 85. She is now reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Mateus Correia da Silva.

Teresa was born on August 20th, 1938 in the town of Vitoria, on the island of Graciosa, Açores. She is predeceased by her parents, Guilhermino Correia de Melo and Virginia da Gloria Teles. She is survived by her son, José Henrique (Goretti, predeceased), and daughter, Virginia (Mario) as well as her adoring grandchildren, Stephanie, Matthew, Erica, Peter, and great-grandchildren Lily and Matteo. Teresa was a loving sister to her five siblings, Maria Guadalupe (predeceased), Glorinda, Manuel (predeceased), Rui (predeceased) and Joaõ. She will be truly missed by her extended family members, her many nieces and nephews, friends, and neighbours.

Teresa married her beloved Mateus on August 28th, 1960 in Graciosa, Açores. Shortly afterwards, they moved to Terceira, where they had their two children.  In October of 1969, Teresa and Mateus moved to Canada in search of a better life for their young family — they worked incredibly hard, bought their first home, and officially became Canadian citizens in 1976.

Their love and devotion for one another was admirable. They shared many happy and memorable years together under one roof.  Despite some hardships along the way due to illnesses, Teresa’s strength and perseverance allowed her to remain a devoted wife, caring mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her.  She had a kind, nurturing heart, a compassionate demeanour and always with a smile on her face. One of her greatest gifts was her faith in God and unwavering devotion to her family. Some of her hobbies included playing cards, crocheting, and reading her Portuguese novels. She loved to sing and dance, was quite witty and enjoyed a good practical joke.

Though her physical presence may no longer be with us, Teresa’s kind spirit will live on in our hearts forever.

We extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to our family and friends for their overwhelming kindness and support. We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to the incredible staff at Maynard Nursing Home for their years of support and care to both our parents Teresa and Mateus Silva.
