Obituary

 (July 24 , 1923 – October 16, 2009)

Vera Cwiek, 86, lived an eventful life and died a peaceful death on October 16, 2009,  at Toronto Grace Health Centre.  She leaves her only child, Olga, son-in-law, Bill Wilkerson, family members in the Ukraine, and her many neighborhood friends.

Vera and her husband, Sam, came to Canada from the Ukraine in 1948, having  survived  the turmoil of World War Two. Industrious, bonded by a love and a resolve to give their child a good life in Canada, they worked hard and ably achieved that  goal.

Sam Passed away in 1997 and  Vera and Olga grew even closer – final parent, only child.  Bravely independent, Vera loved the stuff of life – gardening, kids, animals and participating in community events.

Diagnosed with cancer, she faced her illness with strength, resilience and acceptance. When Vera moved to Toronto Grace for her final weeks of life, she lost one kind of her treasured independence  but was given another by the Grace palliative care team: the opportunity to preserve and nourish her dignity and  the freedom to make everyday choices.

The Grace team  met her needs through spiritual awareness, professional skill and a tender, loving care and for  this, Vera’s family wishes to express to the Grace doctors, nurses and chaplains  their profound gratitude.

A  celebration of the life of Vera Cwiek will take place at Cardinal Funeral Home, 92 Annette Street (east of Keele Street  in west end Toronto) on Monday, October 19, at 12.00 pm. Friends may call from 11 am until service time.

In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make a donation in Vera’s name to Toronto Grace Health Centre, 650 Church Street, Toronto, Ontario, M4Y 2GS. Mary Bertucci, Manager, Donor Services, Toronto Grace Health Centre Foundation is available to assist at 416-925-2251 Ext. 278 and [email protected].
