Obituary

It is with heartfelt loss that we announce the sudden passing of our dearest mama, Wolodymyra Chornopyski on May 29, 2021 at her home of 62 years. Wolodymyra was born on June 8, 1934 in the city of Jaroslaw, Halychyna, to parents of Wolodymyr Andrahewych and Stefania Leheonska. Wolodymyra was the 3rd eldest of seven children.

Wolodymyra graduated from the Conservatory of Music in Jaroslaw, majoring in violin, where she enjoyed performing in the symphony orchestra, and enriching her life through faith and culture.

In 1959, Wolodymyra took the leap of faith, after an exchange of mailed photos and love letters with Petro and immigrated to Canada on the ship “Batory” as a ‘war bride’ in search of a peaceful life. On June 6, 1959, she married her sweetheart confidant Peter Chornopyski ( born in the village of Lavrikivsti, Ternopil, Ukraine) in Toronto.

With devotion and love, Wolodymyra and Petro endured hardship to nurture and raise 3 loving children where they instilled in them Ukrainian faith, culture and heritage.

Throughout her life, Wolodymyra enjoyed supporting fundraising events at her parish Sunday Tea, attending concerts and later in life, looking forward to her weekly egg mcmuffin breakfast with her son and going for long car rides. Her love of the arts and Ukrainian customs was evident through her ‘petit point’ needlework, sewing of Ukrainian embroidery as well as beadwork in which she took great pride in wearing. She loved to sing, dance, take pictures and share stories of her hardships growing up before and after the war.

Wolodymyra was an active member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada (UCWLC) at the Ukrainian Catholic Sobor of Holy Protection Church. She was an Associate member of Sister’s Servants of Mary Immaculate (SSMI), where she found peace in prayer. She was a supporter of the Jaroslaw Society - Ukrainian Immigrants from the region of Jaroslaw.

Today, Wolodymyra leaves behind many cherished friends and family; her dearest children, son, Stefan with wife Marusia, daughters Myroslava (late Andrew) and Petrusia; beautiful grandchildren Natalia, Matthew, Roman (Nadine), Adrian (Chrystia) and Peter (Juliana) and great grandchildren Liliana, Sofia, Wasylko and Luka. She is survived by her sister, Halysia Gruntowych and brother, Marian Andrachiewicz.

Wolodymyra will lay to rest alongside her beloved husband Petro of 41 years of marriage, at St. Volodymyr Cemetery in Oakville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to UCWLC- Holy Protection Branch (Women’s League), to support the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Protection, or for a liturgy in memory of Wolodymyra Please mail your cheque to 30 Leeds Avenue, M6G 3R8 Toronto. (416) 531-9945.

We would like to thank Father Ihor Panchyshyn who presided over the liturgical burial services.
