Obituary

Rhoda D. Carbonell 1942 – 2020. Our hearts are broken to announce the passing of our loved mother, sister, Tita, Lola, and friend. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family who loved her on July 21st 2020 at St. Michael’s hospital after a short battle with cancer. She will always be remembered by her loving family. Preceded by her brother Jory, survived by her son Sam (Jennifer, Madison, Connor and Olivia). Her brother Frank and Myrna, Kathy (Tom), Karen (Mark, Caroline and Josephine), Kristine (Noel, Piper & Phoebe). Sister in-law Lolit, Azela, (Jim), Frances and Joey. Her sister Beth and Rolando, Dino (Trinh and Esme), Paolo (Regina, Dom and Marina), Theo (Endrina). Born in the Philippines and the eldest of four siblings, she graduated nursing school and made her way to Minnesota then Toronto where she planted her roots. Rhoda lived a beautiful life of kindness, curiosity, and service to those she loved and in need. She was a dedicated nurse to many of Toronto’s sickest patients, often the first person patients would see coming out of the operating room at St. Michael’s hospital, where she worked for 39 years. To so many, she was so much more than a caregiver. She selflessly gave of her time, energy and love to her family. She was a second mother to many, including her beloved nephews – all of whom she welcomed without hesitation or judgement when they needed guidance. She was a strong and independent Torontonian who loved her city, the energy and people within it. She shared daily walks, lunches and coffees with her dear friends, a collection of incredible people that brought her so much happiness. Many of these adventurous friends were travel buddies. Rhoda loved to see the world and experience new cultures, always planning her next trip. Besides Antarctica, we’re pretty sure she’s seen every continent. That’s who she was. A beautiful soul, filled with love, joy and curiosity. “Tita you've taught me to value the importance of family and always keeping connected, being of service to those in need and having a strong sense of adventure. I hope to live a life as full you have, in your honor.” – Theo Donations in Rhoda’s memory can be made to St. Michael’s hospital and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
