Obituary

Sistah Afiya Arlene Frederick, a beloved daughter, mother, nana, aunt, sister, cousin, friend and wife has transitioned to the ancestors on December 12th, 2021.

Sistah Afiya was born in Trinidad and Tobago on April 9th, 1969, to hardworking parents, Yvonne Buchanan and Michael Morgan.

Sistah Afiya was a mother to Aluna Chanelle Frederick, her Angel babies who are now with her and her stepson Joel Francis (and many adopted children). She raised her children with love and devotion in Toronto with her husband Jelani Madu.

Sistah Afiya was a Black Heritage Teacher for the TDSB (Toronto District School Board) and known for her resourcefulness and creativity, like her historic collection of Black inventors and their inventions. This collection was turned in a mini Black History Museum and was a huge part of her teachings, educating us all to know who we are and where we came from.

Her hobbies included, volunteering to support community events dedicated to uplifting our people, and dancing to the beat of the African drums - as if the drums themselves controlled her movements. Sistah Afiya was most proud of not only her teaching career, but of her daughter’s creative abilities and of her 3 grandchildren’s growth. She was extremely proud of them all and always spoke of their own unique creative personalities and brilliance.

For 11 years she fought a courageous battle against Breast Cancer which spread into multiple cancers, yet lived her life with an abundant amount of vibrancy and energy that inspired so many.

Sistah Afiya is survived by her mother Yvonne Buchanan, her daughter Aluna Chanelle Frederick, her stepson Joel Francis her 3 grandchildren, Amarii (14), Jaii’Lah (12), and Nicola (5), and her husband, Ras Jelani. Beyond her family, Sistah Afiya is loved and missed by an entire community of men, women and children whose lives she has lovingly impacted in so many ways.

Our Sistah Afiya will live on forever in our hearts and spirits.

Dear Jelani and Aluna, I’m so sad to hear of the passing of my gentle friend. I’ll miss our conversations about education which was her passion. And the insight she had, always gave me so much to contemplate. I’ll keep her memory close to my heart. Offering sincere condolences to you and your family. I would like to attend the live stream of the memorial service if possible.
